“President for 6 years of the Nashville Division of Beazer Homes, David produced record closings, record revenues of $168 Million and a return on capital of 37%.”

Nashville President

David L. Hughes has been in the residential homebuilding and development industry for over 30 years. As an employee of the largest homebuilder in Middle Tennessee (Phillips Builder and then Beazer Homes through an acquisition) he has been involved in delivering over 10,000 homes to the marketplace. As President of the Nashville division for the last 6 years Hughes grew the division to record closings of 670, record revenues of $168,000,000, and record EBIT of $20,000,000 that included a Return on Capital of 37% in 2006.

Hughes started in this career while a student at Memphis State University where he majored in Construction Engineering. While working his way through college he worked for his uncle who was a homebuilder and did miscellaneous jobs on the homes including staking homes on lots, doing frame punch out, plugging and switching homes for the electrician, installing windows and mirrors, to final punch out. By doing these jobs Hughes learned the need for quality construction and the need to satisfy his customers. Upon graduation from college in 1979 the homebuilding industry was in a horrible slump and he went to work for Nashville Bridge doing structural steel design on inland river barges. His love of construction was not being satisfied so he changed jobs in 1980 and went to work for Werthan Industries when he was the plant engineer in charge of renovating the facilities. The plant in which he worked was built shortly after the Civil War and converting these facilities into usable facilities for today’s world proved fun and exciting. Unfortunately after a little over 2 years he had completed all of the proposed changes and was asked to take over the electrical and mechanical engineering for the plant. This was once again taking him away from the construction industry. During this time the homebuilding industry had recovered and an opportunity arose for him to become a superintendent for Phillips Builders. Hughes rose through the ranks at Phillips builders to Vice President of Construction to Sr. Vice President of Construction to Sr. Vice President of Operations to Chief Operating Officer to his final job as Division President. As Division President he managed over 200 direct employees and oversaw construction of single family homes ranging from $100,000 to over $900,000, and townhomes ranging from $80,000 to over $300,000.

Hughes lives in Mt. Juliet a suburb of Nashville Tennessee with his wife of 31 years and their daughter. He is involved in a multitude of Civic and Professional organizations including being on the Board of Directors for the Middle Tennessee Homebuilders Association 1994 – 2006, President of the Large Builders Council 2001 – 2006, Chairman of the Board of Directors for Middle Tennessee State University’s Residential Construction / Residential Development major 1994 – Present, Member of the Board of Directors for the Middle Tennessee Better Business Bureau, and was a Finalist for Manager of the Year in 1991 with Hanson Industries (the then parent company for Beazer Homes). Hughes is an avid outdoorsman and golfer.
